I welcome you to the official website of the
National Disaster Centre. It is our goal to
provide useful information related to natural
and human-caused disasters using this mode of
media.
National Disaster Centre acronym (NDC)
exists under legislation to provide the
necessary and appropriate disaster management
services to the government, and people of Papua
New Guinea. The Centre is part of the
Department of
Provincial & Local Level Government.
Disaster management is a set of
policies, plans, systems and arrangements which
aims at:
-
Preventing
disasters by avoiding hazards, or reducing the
extent of hazards where possible.
-
Reducing the
possible effects of hazards by increasing
communities’ capacity to cope when hazards
impact on them
-
Responding in
an effective and timely way when hazards
actually impact on communities
-
Recovering
the community from the hazard impact back to
normal functioning, but with reduced risk.
Disaster
management overall is about reducing risks to
communities from hazards and their effects. In
the first instance, communities themselves know
their local hazards best, are the immediate
responders to problems, and are ultimately in
charge of the recovery process. Communities
must therefore, with help and support, look at
ways to reduce their hazards and increase their
capacity to cope with the effects of hazards.
The NDC intends
to develop and strengthen disaster management
capacity in PNG over the next few years. We
hope to “empower” communities in disaster
management rather than create dependencies. This
Website, is focused on providing information
about hazards and how to mitigate when a
disaster strike. This website also provide some
of the vital tools that are employed by the
National Disaster Centre which provides clear
goals and directions for the NDC over the next
five years. We intend to improve the capacity
and performance of NDC and focus our external
efforts on;
assisting
communities to become aware and prepared,
developing and maintaining and effective
integrated network of partnerships with and
between stakeholders and
assisting with
the development and maintenance of an effective
disaster management preparedness and response
capability and capacity nation-wide
Thank you very
much for visiting us online
