The National Disaster Centre
has committed K10, 000 to Morobe Provincial
Disaster Office to carry out its response
effort in the landslide affected area of the
Kambum District, Morobe Province.
The landslide caused six
lives, 2 adults and 4 school children. The
landslide occurred at 0730 hrs (PNG time) on
8th January 2007 after
continuous week of rain.
The landslide devastated 5
square kilometers of prime gardening land
for the 300 plus population of Warin village
in the Yus LLG of Kambum District.
The Morobe Provincial
Disaster officers have visited the impact
site by air conducting an Initial Damage
Assessment and advised the people in the
area to relocate to safer grounds. The
Provincial Disaster Office is also providing
relief supplies in the form of food and
tarpaulins based on their assessment. The
PDO has also deployed a DAL officer and
Community Health Worker (CHW) who are
currently on site monitoring the situation
and are updating the PDO of any further
damages.
Meanwhile, the Acting
Director for the National Disaster Centre
commended the efforts of Morobe Provincial
Administration and urged all Provincial
Administrations to attend to such situations
as and when need.
