Hazard Definition

Hazard is the potential for a natural or human-caused event to occur with negative consequences. Hazard is not disaster. The situation becomes a disaster only after a hazard impacts a community and that there is evidence of negative consequences experienced by the affected community.

Geological Hazards

Geological Hazards are the hazards which originate from the earth, ground or that relates to geological nature and activities. Some of the major geological hazards that Papua New Guinea experienced are:

* Volcanoes - Tsunami from cone collapse, Eruptive matters

*  Earthquakes (Seismicity) - Earthquake disaster, Tsunami disaster, landslides disasters. >>Volcano Awareness

Hydrological Hazards
Papua New GuineaHydrological Hazard are hazards which originate from and relate to the activities of water. (The disasters result from hydrological hazards are, tsunami, tidal waves, flood and coastal erosion and so on.). Take note that the triggering cause of tsunami is an earthquake (geological) but is the water (wave) that causes the real impact and damage.>>Read more about Tsunami
